Day 1

We meet at 8:30 a.m. in the lobby at Klimpfjällsgården for Introductions, presentations and a light review of the tour and safety briefing. Then we head straight out on the trail north “Norgefararleden” and take aim at Durrenskalet, here the forest landscape is undulating with many small streams, and it does not take long before we are among sparse birch forest at the tree line and get to see the nice peaks in front of us. The Durrenskalet is a classic U-valley but with the unusual aspect that we from the valley bottom can see all the way up to the summit of Durrenpiken, 1286 möh. After a lunch mixed with some navigation knowledge, we move on to a nice rolling landscape that at this time of year is teeming with “Smörbollar”! We arrive at Tjåkkelestugan just in time for the evening where we spend the night indoors.

Here during the evening we cuddle down in front of the stove, or perhaps the fire outdoors and immerse ourselves in the place, in the culture and the ancient traditions that have been passed on through generations and that still live here. Tjåkkele has been an important place both in Swedish and Sami history.

Day 2

We get up early and after a little morning meeting and after breakfast (and maybe a dip?!) We head further west. Not far into the day, we are already up on the Stekenjokk Plateau, a vast vast landscape where we can look over into to Norway, here is also Sweden’s highest-lying road, Vildmarksvägen, at 876 meters. We continue to talk about the themes of Sami culture and reindeer husbandry as we are in the middle of the reindeerland and Sami cultural landscape. We have lunch in a good spot and then continue to continue until we arrive at the campsite near the mountain Tjaallinge where we, weather permitting can get a great view back over Stekenjokk.

Day 3

Morning meeting per routine and after breakfast we have the opportunity to do a small top trip up on Tjaallingen to enjoy the morning sun, and then continue east back towards Klimpfjäll over the open mountains. The day is slightly shorter at 13km, and what we have in front of us are two highlights. One is a watercrossing over the “teriesbaahkoenjåhkka” (Say it five times quickly), as well as a fabulously beautiful birch forest at Vielmiesmiehkie where traditional Sami huts still stand. Once back in Klimpfjäll we have a final evaluation, debrief, and hugs as we look back on 3 amazing, challenging days and probably got more flavor for the mountains and a greater understanding of the cultural landscape we are constantly moving in.

We move in hilly mountain terrain for many hours per day, therefore you need to have a basic level of fitness.

If you’re using boots, they need to be well seasoned, make sure you’re comfortable with them.

Getting to the start:
Train or bus to Östersund if you come from the south, then länsbuss 45 to Vilhelmina. From there bus 420 to Klimpfjäll.

• No prior knowledge / technical competence needed
  
• You should have basic level of fitness. Experience with previous mountain hiking is good. The tour involves hiking in hilly and varied terrain.
  
• Great if you’ve been practicing watercrossing before, but nothing you must have done.
