Hiking around Kebnekaise is many people’s dream, it’s one of Sweden’s finest alpine areas and this trip is specifically designed for the views and grandeur of this stunning terrain.
This is the adventure for those who dream of higher elevations and glaciers. No less than 22 different glaciers we will have the opportunity to see during the trip that takes us around the entire Kebnekaise area. We start from Nikkaluokta and hike around the dramatic Skartamassive, further north along Kungsleden and up to Nallo. Then via the Jojo trail or “three pass trail” down to Tarfala. A fantastic adventure that offers some of Sweden’s most alpine landscapes. We practice navigation, talk about high altitude, learn about glaciers and practice team building and lots more! Come with us!
What happens if I have to cancel? – If it is more than 60 days before activity, you only pay the deposit of 1500 SEK. Read the booking conditions here
I don’t have equipment, what should I do? – I always recommend Outdoorbuddies to rent equipment, they have a good selection. I also live next door to them and can therefore help with logistics and other mediation if needed. If you want to buy equipment, I am available for consultation and advice!
I’m not sure if I’m properly prepared, how can I tell? – Book an appointment for consultation and we will look at the appropriate activity for your needs, we try to be flexible and adaptable to our common goals, everyone should feel welcome!
What happens if the weather is bad in luck or ahead of a trip? If the weather is so bad that it risks our security, we primarily change the route to better alternatives or adjust timeframes etc. However, weather is part of staying in the mountains so this is something you need to take into account. The last resort is cancellation of the trip but it would take a lot. In that case, it will be rescheduled to another date after dialogue with you.
Can I book a private tour? (1-2 guests) – Absolutely! Write to info@fjallkloka.se for a quote.
What happens if I miss the start time of the tour? – This depends entirely on what activity it is but it is the guest’s responsibility to arrive on time and we can not wait so no refund can be made. But let us know well in advance and we will try to solve it as best we can.
Trip itinerary
Before trip
Digital meeting before trip that takes place end of July. Duration: 2 hours with pause.
Day 1
We meet in the lobby of Nikkaluokta Sarri and after presentations and briefly intro we start hiking west towards Kebnekaise mountain station. Light terrain and mostly flat, but 18 km as most of the day is spent. The iconic Tuolpagorni with its notorious volcanic profile is what the horizon is dominated by as we get closer to the station. If we have the weather with us, we can also see tomorrow’s route. Once at STF Kebnekaise so we set up our tents and have dinner in the restaurant, maybe some nice “before hike” hang in the living room. We load up on calories and prepare for the real start of the adventure.
Day 2
We get up when the morning light has already settled over the valley and during breakfast we go through the map and our continuing trek. We have a safety briefing and a few words about what the days will contain, then it is time for the first stage that will take us to the other side of the valley and further up the Skartamassiff, for incredible views of the valley, Kebnekaise, Tuolpa and other peaks if the visibility allows. Now we really get a feeling of the coming days and a good start for the coming verticality of this trip. If there’s good visibility, we can also practice some map and compass up here. We move on across the higher elevation and down the other side where Skarta’s soft shapes are replaced to a dominant wall of grooved erosion channels on the back of Liddubakti. Our destination for the day is close to several ponds with super nice views in a place not too many visits. We cook dinner together and evaluate the day before bedtime.
Day 3
A slightly calmer day when the goal is just before the Sälka hut 15km away. The long valley offers a variety of views, peaks and glaciers and here we have time to talk a little about the current situation with glaciers, what it actually is, history and what the future looks like. With any luck, we can also see Sweden’s highest peak, the north summit of Kebnekaise above Rabot’s glacier when we pass Guopervagge. We then aim to make camps opposite the Sälka Glacier and enjoy good dinner when the sun goes down behind the twin peaks of Madir and Madirtjåkka.
Day 4
After the morning check-in, we have the opportunity to have breakfast at the Sälkastugorna, fill up our packs in the store and meet some other hikers in this mountain metropolis on Kungsleden. However, we turn from here to the northeast and take aim at Nallo, just over 10k away. Here our trip is once again becoming more alpine in nature as we enter the slightly more isolated areas around Kebnekaise. In Sweden, altitude sickness is almost never a thing, but if you are interested in getting up to a little higher altitudes in maybe the Alps or the Himalayas, we will also discuss a little on the subject and what you need to think about. We pitch the tents near Nallo hut and take it easy for the rest of the day.
Day 5
This day is flexible in the layout. If its nice weather and we feel strong, we can do a trip around the mountain Nallo at a little higher altitude. We get a lot of views and also get in close contact with, among other things, Tjäktjatjåkka glacier. If you need a rest day, you can also stay in the camp today. Camera is highly recommended, but of course you also get pictures after the trip. In the evening we will move a bit south to get into Unna Reitasvaggi. Here our camp will be as far ahead as possible to give us good starting conditions for tomorrow.
Day 6
The fifth day and now we go on the three-passway or “jojo-leden” as it is also called. First, we take the most challenging pass between the Knivkammen and Pyramid, steep and rocky. By Kaskassavagge and the pass over to Guopervagge, to finish with the pass over to Tarfala. This day means about 1100 altitude meters uphill and many active hours. The reward is fantastic views of one of Sweden’s most alpine areas and as an extra carrot we have Tarfala hut with made beds and sauna on the other side. The distance for the day is 13.5km.
Day 7
From here it starts to feel like we’re close to finish but we’re not quite done yet. Tarfaladalen offers fantastic views with the icefall glacier and the Great Glacier from over Kebnekaise. We move south through the tight V shaped tarfalavaggi, and then we turn east on the now familiar trail towards Nikkaluokta. A couple of kilometers later we come down to the boat. We have coffee and wait for the boat before we get a ride over the lake Láddjujávri. Once in Nikkaluokta we have a little more evaluation and look back on an adventure you will not soon forget. Thoughts of the next adventure are already beginning to form and perhaps you’re looking to rejoin the same group. Hugs and goodbye when the bus picks us up and takes us to Kiruna and on.
*Please note that planning may change both before and during the trip based on the current conditions*
Creating good conditions for the trip
This is a long and demanding tour in vulnerable environments. You need to have adequate fitness and know that you can handle the terrain. The trip involves quite long parts of rocky block terrain. There are also a few water crossings. But you don’t need any special skills.
Food planning:
We will have dinner and breakfast at STF Kebnekaise but for the rest of the trip you need to bring all the meals yourself. However, it is also possible to replenish the storage in Sälka. See STF’s descriptions of what’s in the assortment.
The lunch breaks will be pretty short on this tour, about 30-60 minutes. You are advised to be familiar with your kitchen. Lunch that doesn’t need to be cooked is also a good idea. You will always have time for dinner.
If you need to rent equipment, I recommend Outdoorbuddies (Outdoor Buddies.se) but make sure that it is done well in advance of the trip partly so you can get acquainted with the equipment but also so there will not be hassle with transport.
If you have boots, make sure they are properly walked in, and waxed.
After booking, you will receive an invitation to a digital meeting for the trip that will be held at the end of July.
